I've always had a very straightforward way of communicating; Call it blunt, or direct, or assertive. I make an effort to be transparent in what I think, what I feel and what I want, whether that's at home, at work or anywhere else. Plainly said, I believe life is too short to waste time being insincere.
As important as assertiveness is to me, I strive to never abandon my humility. I never want my words to be interpreted as insensitive, selfish or disrespectful, and I think the same can be said for any woman like me. The sad truth is, though, that the world doesn't always welcome assertive women with open arms, despite the fact that some of the most successful women in history share this trait.
Strong female icons like Meryl Streep, Tina Fey and Ariana Huffington are both applauded and shamed for their dominant personalities. While they're no stranger to criticism, they haven't let the haters get them down. These women are as driven as ever, and they've got some words of wisdom for other ladies following their lead.
"I succeeded by saying what everyone else is thinking."
"Never be ashamed! There's some who'll hold it against you, but they're not worth bothering with."
J. K. Rowling
"If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing."
"If I listened to my critics, I would still be at home under my bed right now."
"Am I bossy? Absolutely. I don't like to lose, and if I'm told 'no,' then I find another way to get my 'yes.'"
"Sometimes people expect that I'm going to be tough. It's not a bad situation. People treat you better. People are on time."
"Patience can be a good thing - but not necessarily. Sometimes it's not so bad to be impatient."
"I realized that secrecy is actually to the detriment of my own peace of mind and self, and that I could still sustain my belief in privacy and be authentic and transparent at the same time."
"A good person is a person who accepts their responsibility in things and moves forward and tries to constantly evolve and isn't afraid to say no or challenge someone or be honest or truthful."
"To be silent is to be passive."
"Integrate what you believe in every single area of your life. Take your heart to work and ask the most and best of everybody else, too."
"When you feel powerful, you are willing to stand up for your rights, you are willing to stand up for what you believe in, you're more willing to stand up and be counted."
"It would be futile to attempt to fit women into a masculine pattern of attitudes, skills and abilities and disastrous to force them to suppress their specifically female characteristics and abilities."
"Remember always that you not only have a right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.."
"I'm very determined, honest, open and definitely very energetic. I expect a lot as a boss and I'm very demanding, but I ask that of myself too.
Kimora Lee Simmons
"I try to be as honest about what I see and to speak rather than be silent, especially if it means I can save lives, or serve humanity."
"Men are always like, 'You're so intimidating.' I don't find myself to be. But whatever - I'm not going to try to be less intimidating."
"It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent."
